THE MELROSE OUTLET
LISA KLINE
I never liked being on sale in my stores. It looks messy and cheap, and very hard to merchandise to look good.
So I never went on sale in the store, I decided to have semiannual alley blow out sales which not only took 3 days to set up and take down and we needed a security guard to stay all night but they made a lot of money, moved a lot of inventory and became a famous event that was so much fun that everyone waited for! We had a register outside, music, we would partner up with a charity and it was a full scene.
They became so much work and I had so many stores that I decided I needed an outlet store to send all the sale items to live that people could shop any day of the week. I also always wanted a store on Melrose between Fairfax and La Brea when I was a kid growing up in LA but by the time I opened a store it was too cheesy of a street but for high end contemporary but perfect for my outlet store and corporate office!
It satisfied a lifelong dream and we had a 4000 sq foot office with a pied-a terre in the back, parking, a killer roof top we hosted parties on and retail in the front which housed the outlet which we painted black with flames and was very wild and noticeable. My mom did these incredible windows and it was very cool. But way ahead of it’s time that is for sure! If I had them now they would probably be very busy!
